The math help club provides the opportunity to get help with math. Students can be helped with their math homework and any math questions until they are able to comprehend the subject.

“The main goal is to aid students who have difficulty comprehending concepts with their math homework. It’s mainly a pathway for students who have economic difficulty to have a tutor without having the need to spend great sums of money,” stated club leader Ryan Kim, grade 12.

“I highly recommend this club to someone who is struggling with school assignments or worried about the quiz and tests. I think it also would be good for the student who can’t get tutoring outside of school, as it is free for everyone and can get help easily,” said Minkyu Lim, a grade 12 club member.

Club meetings are held on Wednesdays during lunch in room 201. The sponsor teacher of the club is Nevena Savovic, who is in the mathematics department. The club members are made up of students and tutors. Students can sign up for a club by contacting Kim through email.

Kim decided to create the club as he enjoyed aiding his peers in grade 9. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to begin the club during grade 10. In his final two years at Gleneagle, he finally began the club.

“Their [fellow] happiness when earning a higher grade seemed rewarding and cathartic for me. Because of this, I had planned to form the math help club,” said Kim.

According to Kim, the club was not an official form at first, Kim opened a Discord server and operated it for students and tutors to interact. Afterwards, Kim submitted the proposal for the club to the office to start running the club. Finally, he was able to create and lead the club.

“I couldn’t understand the math concepts fully after class, but with the help of a peer in the club, I was able to have detailed tutoring and understand the problems easily, which was great,” said Lim.

“Last year we were really a small running club with few tutors and a couple of students. However, this year, members seemed to have expanded immensely with several students coming into the class to receive help with their homework,” said Kim.
