According to “Autonomous Driving: Closer than you think?” by Katie Ingram, autonomous transports are becoming closer to reality. As regards the cars, there are several reasons why the self-driving is considered a valid option in the near future.
According to articles such us “Self Driving Cars: Pros and Cons” by Jonathan Negretti, fully automated self-driving cars, depending on what country, are nowadays becoming the common reality.
July 14 2022, Article 34a of the Vienna Convention became effective and European Union has officially declared that self-driving cars can travel on road, despite the fact that each country can decided what to do.
Some of the most shared and noticed reasons are, for instance, the decreasing of vehicle crashes and traffic flow and the more efficient travels.
For the first reason, data says that of the 37,133 vehicle fatalities in 2017, 94% of the crashes were caused by human error and it’s known that this happens every year. So, from the same source, it’s estimated that thanks to these sophisticated systems, they will decrease by 90%. This mainly because self-driving cars could potentially eliminate crashes caused by inattention or distracted driving, driver fatigue and everything related to driving under the effect of narcotic substances.
As regards the other reason, fully automated vehicles are able to communicate with each other through a network of computers. This communication allows for real-time analysis which can help determine best routes of travel, as well as calculate appropriate speeds and distances between vehicles during travels.
All that will also help societies, which produce this kind of cars, saving a big amount of money. Reports have shown that autonomous vehicles can help save society approximately $800 billion each year. The reduction in car crash-related costs, reduced strain on the healthcare system, more efficient transportation, better fuel savings, and more can all contribute to the overall societal cost-savings.
Another significant factor in the self-driving cars pros and cons debate is the environment. Autonomous cars will likely be electric rather than utilizing internal-combustion engines. Furthermore, the consistent speeds self-driving cars will be traveling at will reduce constant braking and accelerating. These factors will all contribute to reducing emissions and becoming more environmentally sustainable.
Through a reduction in fuel consumption, also the air quality in big cities could be significantly improved.
The start of the self-driving car spread, would certainly help the significant portion of whoever can’t drive because of any kind of disfunction or disease that affects them or, more easily, for all the seniors and blind people who can’t drive alone.
All these things constitute the main reasons why people should start aim to the self-driving systems and cars in their everyday life., even because they are now the common reality.
