The senior boys’ volleyball team had a challenging start to the season, however, the team continues to improve their skills inside the court and out of it.
To date, the senior boys have had three wins. Against Archbishop Carney on October 4, they won all three sets. Then the team played against Centennial on October 11 and won 3-1. The most recent win was against Port Moody Secondary on October 27, winning 3-1 sets.
The team has had three tough losses so far. Against Pinetree on September 29, they had a close 1-3 loss but will see them for a rematch. The team played Riverside on October 13 and lost again, another close game with a score of 0-3. Their last loss was against Charles Best on October 25, where they lost all three sets. “We haven’t been winning every game as we should be,” says Gyu Min Jang, grade 12, “but there’s certainly strong team chemistry within our team of boys.”
The team’s most recent game was against Port Moody Secondary on October 27. Despite recent losses, the boys pulled through and won 3-1. The team played best during the first set of the night, scoring point after point, and displaying great teamwork with one another.
According to Oliver Hum, grade 12 team member, “Last year, a lot of players had just started playing, so it was hard to get players to fully commit.” Everyone, especially the grade 12’s of the team has also been putting a lot of effort into games and practices because this is their very last year.
“The season has gone well,” says Madison Watt, coach, COAST, and foods teacher, “the boys have come a long way, they’ve improved a lot, and they are very coachable.” Only three players from last year’s team have continued to play this year due to most of the team graduating. Her hope for them is to continue to improve enough to make it to Fraser North at the end of the season.
The team will be facing Heritage Woods for the first time tonight this season. With the confidence from both the team and coach Watt, the senior boys’ volleyball should have a great game and successful rest of the season.
