Owen Nguyen / Staff reporter

My name is Owen Nguyen, I am currently 15 years old and in grade 10. My two favorite hobbies are playing Tennis and video games. My dream is to obtain a division one tennis scholarship to further my education. The main family members that I also live with are my mom, dad, and older sister. The two subjects at school that I enjoy are physical education and physics.

When I was younger my parents introduced me to the sport of tennis, I first started to try to hit a tennis ball at around the age of five. As more years passed overtime, I slowly started to get better and better. I started to play competitions at the age of nine, I played under twelve and under ten tournaments. At the age of 11 I achieved the opportunity to play in my first ever Canadian Nationals for the under twelve age group, to me it felt like a big steppingstone to prove I have gotten better. After the few covid years we had it was time for me to play another national, at the time it was my last year of playing under fourteen. Before the tournament started it felt like I had no pressure because I have not played a lot of tournaments in the past two years. After seven long days of the tournament, I managed to win singles and become a finalist for doubles, this win really helped my confidence, and it kept me motivated to get better and better. During this recent summer I managed to win a doubles title at the under sixteen nationals. With all this competing I have one dream of mine which is to obtain a division one scholarship to college. This would help me to a great extent because I would like to further my education, and it would help later in life.

The main family members which I live with is my mom, dad, and older sister. My parents were both born and grew up for a brief period in Asia. My dad was born in Vietnam 1972, during this time in Vietnam it was extremely dangerous because of the Vietnam war which has been happening over a few years already. The war was between the north and the south of Vietnam but unfortunately my dad’s family was on the losing side of the war and was forced to immigrate to Canada after being at several refugee camps. My mom immigrated to Canada when she was in high school, it was tough for her because they had little to no English-speaking experience. My parents met each other at the University of British Columbia. My older sister is 17 years old in grade 12. Her name is Alexis Nguyen, she was born in British Columbia and she goes to the same secondary school as me. She enjoys to play and curling and read books. When we were younger, we used to not get along too well but overtime we worked well together and started to develop a better relationship.

My family is important to me

I enjoy high school but there are two main subjects that I prefer more than others. My main two favorite subjects are physics and physical education. Physics is a subject that stands out to me because I find it interesting, and it involves a lot of math. Despite me enjoying physics my family members have a hatred for physics. The other subject that I enjoy is physical education because you normally just play sports, and I am a quite athletic person.
