Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi (جمال أحمد خاشقجي), was a writer and journalist born in Saudi Arabia from a Turkish origin family, during his life he was much criticized for his closeness to the Muslim Brotherhood, and for his interview with Osama bin Laden, founder of the Islamic terrorist organization Al Qaeda, from which he took distanced by disapproving the exaltation of violence.
He was a journalist active in various newspapers in which he often criticized the new government of Saudi Arabia and especially the prince of the country Mohammad bin Salam.
Before his disappearance, Jamal had already been censored when his Twitter profile was blocked for questioning the activities led by the country’s government, leading him to self-exile and leave the country.
On 2 October 2018, Khashoggi entered in the Saudi Arabia consulate to obtain some documents related to his marriage, but he never left the building being later declared missing.
The body of the writer has never been found but thanks to the investigations that were opened 8 anonymous were accused of the murder and convicted by the Saudi court. According to the article by Jane Corbin published by the BBC would have been found some footage that see Jamal entering in the consulate and never leave, and audio recordings also published by the Turkish newspaper Sabah, in which Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb an officer of the Saudi embassy and a collaborator of the prince, and Salah Muhammed Al-Tubaigy can be heard discussing how to kill and dismember Khashoggi’s body, and according to the article by Stephanie Kirchgaessner published by The Guardian it also seems that the U.S. intelligence would have found evidence that would condemn Mohammed bin Salman as the instigator of the journalist’s murder.
The New York Times also published an article about Omar Abdulaziz, a Saudi reporter with whom Khashoggi had worked, who now lives in exile in Montreal, Canada, in which he claimed to know why Jamal had been killed.
Was also published a documentary on the story shot by the film director Bryan Fogel in which is told the story of the journalist and some testimonies including Omar’s interview.
The case is still pending, and Jamal’s sister continues to fight for justice, but despite her efforts in trying to get the convicts judged by the Turkish court, the transfer of the mandate to the Saudi court was recently approved, which according to her would not be able to judge the accused correctly.
