As We approach the finalization of the bid for the host city of the 2030 Olympic winter games, 20 years after the now legendary 2010 Vancouver games, Indigenous leaders are trying to secure Vancouvers place as the host city for the Olympics. Indigenous themes and culture would be interwoven into the general theme of the 2030 Olympics through things like Indigenous mascots and art-style.

“It would be much better if Vancouver hosted the Olympics instead of another city because it would be much because it would be much cheaper and better for the environment because we could re-use the old facilities” stated Jan Fischer, Grade 11.

“I remember walking through the streets of Vancouver with my mom when I was 6 years old, and everybody was chanting ‘Let’s go Canada!’, I would love to see that return” said Evan Shelkie, Grade 12. For many of the more senior students at Gleneagle, the 2010 Winter games are a cherished childhood memory.

12 years ago, we saw the city of Vancouver united by the dream of hosting one of the greatest Olympics in modern history. As a city we watched Wayne Gretzky light the torch and Sidney Crosby score the “Golden goal”. It’s the moment like these that hosting the 2030 Olympics would allow us to relive.

The ability to not only, relive the memories of 2010 whilst also honouring the Indigenous peoples whose land the games would be hosted on is an excellent opportunity to show off just what the city of Vancouver is made of.
