After a decision made by the City of Vancouver/whistler, the Canadian Olympic Committee, and four first nation groups. It has been announced on Feb 1st, that Vancouver has put in a bid to become the holding city of the 2030 winter Olympics.
Representatives from Lil’wat, Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations paired up with the mayors of Vancouver and Whistler to partner up for the Olympics
“With this collaboration agreement, our nations have a unique opportunity to work closely with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees to determine the impacts and benefits of bringing the 2030 Winter Games back to our territories,” according to Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow
This would be the first Olympics in history to be held by an indigenous organization
“This could definitely be a new way of celebrating the Olympics with the use of aboriginal heritage,” said Jackson Tait, a student at Gleneagle.
The Vancouver 2010 Games cost 4 billion. Many Vancouver residents are worried about the financial cost of the 2030 Olympic games, stating “It could cause higher taxes and growth in the housing market.” But according to Sauder business school at UBC, it is stated that there won’t be growth in the housing market.
