The Lafarge Lake Lights event has returned to brighten winter nights again this holiday season. The event runs from November 27 to January 31, with over 100, 000 lights and other festive displays, which were hand-crafted by over 500 volunteers, and are placed around the lake.

The decorated 1.2km path makes for photo opportunities this Christmas. With newly installed Covid-19 restrictions in place, people can now safely enjoy the views and share the holiday spirit with others in the community.

The event was cancelled during the 2020/2021 period due to the pandemic, but it is back up and running again this year. Two separate walking trails and park hosts will now be present to minimize large crowds and keep the flow moving.

Do not let this discourage you from visiting the attraction. Go out and share the holiday spirit with those in the community. “I go see the lights every year with my family and friends. I didn’t go this year yet, but I will soon,” said Sally Kim, grade 10. “The lights bond us as a community because we get together to go see the lights at the lake every winter.” The Official Coquitlam website advises those planning on visiting to come before 6 p.m. and after 8 p.m. as those are considered the peak hours with trails and parking spots full.

“This event also brings us closer together by letting everyone in the community to enjoy the attraction, as it is free and accessible,” said Nyomi Khau, grade 10. There was no kick-off party this year due to the pandemic, but the event is still filled with new elements and surprises for visitors to enjoy. “I think these things bring our community together more strongly and positively.” said Yedam Jang, grade 11. Wendy Wiederick, Coquitlam’s parks operations manager explained that “this year, it’s really for the local community to get out and to continue walking during the colder, wetter months.”

This event is meant to make new memories with the ones around you and elevate the holiday cheer in the community. “I remember going there and walking around the whole lake with my friends, which is one of my favorite memories I have with them.” said Sally. It is a great activity for this Christmas season, and it seems each year the lake gets more and more lights.
