Intramurals, which had been suspended due to COVID-19, has returned to Gleneagle.
It is an opportunity for students to compete against their peers in various sports.
Intramurals had been at Gleneagle for a couple of years before the pandemic but it had disappeared due to the infectious disease spreading around the world.
“Intramural is a fun sports league for students outside of school,” said Cam Comeau, physical education teacher and athletic director. “Intramurals was not possible last year because it is a sports activity that involved physical contact between participants. However, it will return from December 2, 2021.”
Beginning from December 2, it happens each day 1 for the rest of semester 1 during lunch break.
Anyone in Gleneagle Secondary school can participate in it which means not only students but also teachers can join and play.
“This year, we have various sports such as dodgeball, handball, basketball, indoor soccer, badminton, flag football, volleyball, etc,” said Comeau. “Usually at gyms, and if the weather is nice, we can play it outside of school.”
Under the COVID-19 regulation, the capacity is limited depending on the sport and how many students participate.
Students must follow all instructions from the PHE department and Gleneagle Athletic Leadership students and are prohibited from bringing in food and beverages other than bottled water.
Checking in with the Athletic Leadership Students or Mr. Comeau at the door before participating and appropriate activewear are required.
The weekly schedule will be posted on Talon Talk every day.
The purpose of intramural is to give students a chance to have outside activities.
“I think it gives an opportunity to stay active and enjoy being social during COVID-19.” said Comeau.
At the time when COVID-19 is still in full swing, Intramural is a good way for students to interact joyfully with their friends and teachers while doing physical activities.
Students can get out of the rigid class atmosphere and feel a positive vibe in the school community and make new friends.
“I think it is a really good time for students to be with people doing fun sports activities. Sports activities with my friends always excite me, but especially Intramurals, which is between boring classes has become a very valuable time for me.” Said John Jo, a grade 10 student.
