The wrestling team is back!
After missing last year’s season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Coach Brian Hunter, EAL teacher, is excited about the return, stating “I think it’s great… the [students] missed team sports and they want [them] back.”
While there may be worries about how the student athletes will fare having missed an entire year or more of team sports, Hunter is less concerned, as all the other schools are facing the same situation. In addition, pre-COVID, the team at Gleneagle was only made up of four students.
“Our most experienced athlete was only wrestling for a year before the pandemic hit,” said Hunter.
His hopes this year are to grow interest in wrestling and to build up the team.
Members of the team are also excited as they prepare for their matches in the new year.
“I’ve been wrestling since middle school, so I was sad that we couldn’t practice or compete last year. I’m really excited to be back” said Symmes Kiara gr9.
Applications to the team are now closed. Practices are held with the wrestling team at Pinetree secondary school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-5:00pm.
Matches are currently limited to players and coaches only, but this may change along with the COVID-19 situation. The first match will be on February 11, 2022 at the zone championships.
