This year’s Terry Fox fundraiser donated $2294.30 for a cancer patient study, so principal, Wendy Yu, cut her hair in Adam Hayes‘s classroom, to donate for a wig.
A fundraising event for cancer research was held from September 23rd to October 5th. On October 3rd, on the school’s official Instagram account, Ms. Yu posted that she would cut her hair once Gleneagle students raised over $2,000. Students and staff raised an all-time high of $2294.30 through donations. After Terry fox Committee confirmed donations of over $2000, Wendy Yu cut her hair in Adam Hayes’s leadership class 12.
Her hair was cut by Janet Kim, a former hairdresser who now teaches Korean, the fashion industry and photography to students. To donate her hair, her length was measured, tied with her rubber band, and cut.
Terry Fox Committee of Leadership 12 students, who hosted the Terry Fox Run, thanked the Gleneagle students for their interest and donations in the first place to help us achieve our fundraising goals. The committee put a lot of effort into promoting the importance of the Terry Fox Run, even though many students know the meaning of the Terry Fox Run. For new students who don’t understand why they do the Terry Fox Run, Leadership students went directly to the EAL class and explained it in more detail. They also made online donations possible so that many students and staff could participate in the grant.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in various locations worldwide to commemorate Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope and raise money for cancer research. Since its inception, it has raised over $750 million (CAD) through the ‘Terry Fox Foundation.
Most of the students said they thought Gleneagle students and staff should do the Terry Fox run because the Terry Fox marathon significantly raised awareness and funding of cancer research. One student also said that she would do her best to help many cancer patients and worldwide studies because she thought running at her best could aid cancer research. Wendy Yu said the reason Gleneagle students and staff must run because “Terry Fox was a School District43 student himself, and for his legacy to continue, we do the run every year not only to remember to raise awareness to continue fundraising for essential classes.”
Ms. Yu said children with cancer would receive wigs made from her hair. She also said that this is the least she can do for patients receiving cancer treatment and those struggling with cancer. She also noted that student donations for cancer research would go to the Terry Fox Foundation.
A student who did his best to participate in the Terry Fox Run—”Terry Fox gave people an opportunity to think about cancer research and cancer treatment once more. It was also significant to have the opportunity to donate to give researchers practical help.” She said of Terry Fox Run.
