In 2004, Apple’s newest iPod became the most popular way to collect and listen to digital music on the go. 15 years later, Apple is still one of the top brands in electronics and they are still releasing new portable ways to listen to music.
Apple’s original iPod was released on October 23, 2001, but the sales stayed roughly the same until 2004, when Apple released their fourth generation iPod, known as the iPod Mini.
Sales over quadrupled compared to the previous models of the iPod; 4.4 million in comparison to less than 1 million beforehand. Other digital music services and devices were also released that year, but none of them compared to the popularity of this new iPod. Because of this rising demand, many describe 2004 as “the year of the iPod.” By this point, iPod had almost become the generic term for a digital music player, just like Walkman 20 years prior.
Since then, Apple has stayed consistent with being high up on the list for great electronics over the years. They launched their first set of Bluetooth earbuds, known as the AirPods, on December 13, 2016, however, the design was not well-liked at first. Many had mocked the design, but these earbuds soon became very popular.
October 28, 2019 was the day Apple revealed the newest audio device in their lineup, the AirPods Pro, which is the third edition. These new Bluetooth earbuds have been available since October 30, meaning many have had the chance to try them out.
“AirPods are [now] the best-selling headphones in the world. The one-tap setup experience, incredible sound and iconic design have made them a beloved Apple product, and with AirPods Pro, we’re taking the magic even further. We think customers are going to love this new addition to the AirPods family.” Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said on Apple Newsroom.
This technology has now overtaken the iPods, as it is easier for most to do everything with their phones. Music streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, are easily accessible from mobile devices, therefore the iPod lineup is less popular than it used to be. Many now use their phones as a music device instead.
It’s safe to say that Apple will not be slowing down any time soon. Their products are only becoming more of a hit among many of all ages, and there is so much left to explore in the ways of music technology.
