Father loses large amounts of jewelry in a robbery
The first article that caught my eye was about my peer’s father being robbed in LA. He works at a successful jewelry business and travels to sell beautiful pieces. As I skimmed through the part where the robbers close in on his car, I was left shocked. Going at high speeds on the highway while two others cars are slowly trying to corner you must be a terrifying experience, especially when you’re carrying many valuables that you have skill in selling. If I were to be in that situation, I would also try to negotiate with the robbers and come to a mutual agreement. However, if there was a safe gap for me to escape, I would take the risk and then later report the incident to the police. I would also memorize as much of their vehicles as I can to better describe them. From reading this article, I learned that you should always be more cautious on the road, especially in foreign countries. I also learned that your life is truly more valuable than goods that you have in your car, no matter the cost of them or how much “bling” they have. Put yourself first. Overall, this article was very interesting to read.

The experience of being a Romanian immigrant
The second article that interested me was about the immigration of my peer’s mother from Romania. Immediately, I could relate to the article since both my parents also had the same journey when immigrating to Canada from Ukraine. I could understand the struggle of her mother working as hard as she can to afford bread and other little necessities for her family. The times that our parents grew up in were not easy. During many moments, I had a clear picture in my head and could visualize most of the process and stress of planning each step to immigrate to a new country. A valuable lesson I’ve learned from reading this article is that sometimes you need to take huge risks to get the life you want. Nothing comes for free and there will be many sacrifices. Fortunately, it is worth it in the end. I’ve also realized how grateful I am to live in such a safe, free, and welcoming country. This story definitely has a connection to me.

Amanda Gao- From nothing to everything
My last article that I read was inspiring, motivating, and moving. I reread the sections about the traumatic Earthquake in Tangshan and was shocked at how strong nature truly is. As we don’t have many Earthquakes here in Vancouver, I could only imagine and guess at how everyone there must’ve felt, especially Amanda and her sister at such a young age. At the end of the article, a quote that stuck to me was “where you start does not determine where you end”. This made me stop and think about how far I’ve come as a student and all the future achievements I will accomplish if I truly want them. I also feel thankful to have all of my family near me or atleast one phone call away. An important lesson I’ve learned is to never take anything for granted and always be motivated to do better in something.
