The Hunger Games is a Susan Collins novel about a brave young girl named Katniss Everdeen facing a cruel involuntary series of gladiator games. The country of Panem is separated into 12 districts and a capital. The capitol was full of the rich folk who watched, and bet on the death matches, while each of the 12 districts were forced to volunteer one boy, and one girl to the games every year. In Katniss’ attempt to survive the game, she ignites the beginning of a revolution against the capital.
While this book is a dystopian novel with the plot of a dark story of corruption and violence, you also see relationships form between the characters. Collins did an incredible job of writing from Katniss’ point of view. You can almost feel her emotions with her. The story is a wild series of events with many twists and turns throughout. You learn with Katniss who she can and cannot trust, in and out of the games. You watch her open up to her loved ones and learn what it’s like to have a true friend. You watch her fall in and out of love and see the true colours of the people around her.
This has got to be one of my favorite books and every time I read it, I fall back in love with it. The series continues, reaching four books, the first three books have been turned into major motion pictures making a box office of $2,956,762,690 in total with another movie expected to release on November 17 of 2023, titled: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
