The shelter society club is a club devoted to fundraising money to donate to homeless youth.
Their focus is also spreading awareness of the current situation of homeless youth by hosting sales and events to fundraise money to later donate the profits to charities.
The shelter society club hosted a bake sale on December 6 and 7.
The reason clubs/opportunities like the shelter society club exist is that there is generally a large sum of homelessness throughout Vancouver, BC, and the numbers are increasing daily. This is where groups like the shelter society club come in to fundraise money to support the homeless youth due to the growing rates of homeless youth in Vancouver each day.
The goal of this club is to host events for the school and to profit from those events and after the events, they end up donating all the profits to charities that support homeless youth.
The Bake sale happened throughout lunchtime for the 2 days and sold many sweets such as cookies, brownies, etc.
Cleo Chau, grade 12, is one of the organizers of the shelter society club and was in charge of the bake sale. Cleo was asked how the bake sale went and she said they raised approximately $200 at the bake sale. Thanks to a program involving donors, their sponsor teacher Ms. Smith was able to get our donation tripled. Therefore, they donated a total of $600 to Covenant House. Approximately 60 sweets were sold. They have yet to decide what their next event will be; however, they will be brainstorming event ideas at the next club meeting.
Sam Brassington, a Chemistry teacher, was interviewed on how she feels about the shelter society club, and she thinks that what the club is doing is a good thing and that it is the beginning of something greater. Brassington thinks that there should overall be more aware of the homeless youth and more programs like the shelter society club because each day the amount of homeless youth increases every single day so if we continue to spread more awareness on the situation then we could eventually bring an end to this problem.
Carie Wang, Grade 9, who is a member of the shelter society club said that the bake sale went great and that it was amazing that they were able to donate $600 to the covenant house.
