I was invited to spend the day at SFU on Nov 28 with the Indigenous Youth Worker and other indigenous classmates. I was excited to go to visit SFU as were the other Indigenous youth group members. I was also nervous because I have never been In such a big place with so many people.
SFU is big and looked like there were rooms for everything, there are around 25,000 Undergraduates. SFU has many locations but the one we visited was in burnaby. I was excited visiting SFU but was also nervous ; I don’t even go to SFU. It was the feeling that I will have to go to university someday and take classes, spending the day there was like a trial.
The indigenous group and I got to sit through a Criminology class and I was very excited because I wanted to sit in the big lecture room and we did. The professor was kind enough to let some highschool kids sit in her class and it was very interesting. Although we visited in the middle of the semester, we still understood what the professor was talking about, and I might take criminology if I attend SFU. Criminology is interesting and if you get a degree there are many exiting jobs that can come out of that. Spending the day at SFU was a great experience.
We got to see what is was like outside of highschool. It seems you get more freedom, and classes are quite different, you could have a bunch or just one that day as it depends on how many classes you take and when they are scheduled. Before our group met with the tour guide, we looked around and I was amazed at how many food places there were.
Walking around the university felt like being in a huge mall or a smaller city because everything is connected, and it was so massive and the amount of people that were there was crazy. One of many things I found interesting and kind of intimidated me was the fact that most times the class would be so big the teacher would not even know your name. While on the tour we saw many things like gyms, swimming pool, track field, dorms and many places to eat. We went to look at the dorms, and I thought they would be bad and small, but when we got there, they were not bad. The dorms looked nice and the tour guide told us she lived on campus with her friends and said it was awesome.
The indigenous group and I visited the indigenous youth center, and they were so kind to us they offered tutoring and help just in general if we ever decided to attend to their school. When we visited the library, I was amazed because of the size there are 7 floors and the lower you get you quieter you need to be. There are rooms in the library if you and some people need to do a project or work. The SFU library was cool they had a 3d printer room and an audio room for people who like to make videos or videos sound effect.
Daniel Schiewe, another student in the indigenous youth group said “while being at SFU it felt welcoming and it seemed a lot easier than people make it sound”. After spending the day at SFU I was motivated to go there it was a wonderful experience and I am thankful for being invited.
