As the Winter season kicks off many students are getting set to hit the slopes with the ski and snowboard club.
This club’s purpose is “giving people opportunities to go up to Whistler and experience a pretty amazing day of skiing or boarding and giving opportunities to kids who might not normally have this” said Peter Poka, socials studies teacher and ski and snowboard club organizer.
Many students were eager to join with a full list of people on the trips and a waiting list and was open to join not regarding any specific skill level. It is still open to join by contacting either Poka or Simon Quinto, physical education teacher and ski and snowboard club organizer.
There are 48 students and four adults planning on going on three different days, which is based off a first come first served basis.
Their first trip will be on January 26, which will be held in Whistler.
Adding on their next two trips which will be held on February 16 and March 1.
Poka adds that he “would want to see the kids having fun and this club presents a good opportunity to hang out with friends, and to enjoy some spectacular scenery at one of the best ski resorts in North America”.
Last year there was no ski and snowboard club due to the district not allowing any field trips therefore, the club has not been able to run for the last couple years because of covid.
With the addition of ski and snowboard club there are currently 4 students interested in competing in the BC school championships which starts on February 8 and will be held in Whistler Blackcomb. These Gleneagle students plan to join up with other schools in the district to go to their first race in early December and is organized by Quinto.
