Lucia Chen / staff reporter

My name is Lucia Chenand I’m a grade 10 student from Gleneagle Secondary School in Coquitlam, British Columbia. I was born in China, specifically Jinan, and my family emigrated to Canada when I was ten years old, so I can speak English and Mandarin. Usually, I go back to China every year to visit my friends and family, but I haven’t gone back to China for almost four years because of Covid and I really want to visit once I have a chance.

One of my biggest hobbies is playing the piano, and I spend most of my free time doing it. I started playing the piano when I was five years old, and I’ve been playing it for almost ten years. One of my favourite songs is “River Flow in You” by Yiruma, not only because the song is easy, but I also enjoy the melody. Some other songs that I enjoy playing are “Ballade pour Adeline”, Mariage d’amour”, and “Castle in the Sky”. Playing the piano is a really good way for me to relax and can make me forget all the problems that I have. Before I even knew it, music had become an indispensable part of my life.

Another interesting fact about me is that I really like to travel. If I can, I want to travel the whole world. The place that I want to go to the most is Singapore. I went to Singapore once when I was seven years old, but I barely remember anything since I was too young. I really enjoy the weather in Singapore because its average temperature is around 28 °C and I really like warm places. Singapore is also one of the largest financial centers in the world and has a highly developed economy. Some of my other favourite places that I want to visit include:

  • Japan
  • Italy
  • France
  • Hawaii
  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • Korea

Last but not least, my dream is to become an investment banker in the future. Investment bankers are financial advisors to corporations and sometimes to governments. Some of the big companies include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, etc. They help their clients raise money, and it can mean issuing stock, floating a bond, etc. In order to become an investment banker, I need to have at least a bachelor’s degree, and most investment banks prefer degrees in finance, business administration, or other business-related fields. The reason I want to become an investment banker is that they are generally well paid, but it’s also a highly stressful profession. If I can, I want to have my own company in the future because I don’t want to work for anyone else and I want to be my own boss.
