Kimberleigh Pereira / Staff reporter

A grade 11 student from Gleneagle high school, Kimberleigh Pereira is an active participant in athletic leadership inside and outside school. She is currently working as a water polo coach for the recreational team Coquitlam Loins, as Pereira has a passion for the sport and likes guiding children to have an active, enjoyable lifestyle. She is excited to explore more passions and use her free time carefully as she has more time to relax because she quit high-performance water polo to focus more on school. Pereira would describe herself as outgoing, communicative, and a thoughtful thinker.

Example of waterpolo!

These attributes are displayed by her actions in her favorite course Active Living. Throughout the past couple of weeks, she has found herself in more of a guidance position in the class. She has thoroughly enjoyed all the activities/tasks Ms. Anderson has given her and hopes there is more room to grow as a leader and a teammate. She has also gotten her fair share of nicknames from the teacher and other peers. Some examples are Kimmy, Kimberslay, Becca, Kim, Kimchi, and Kimberlay. Pereira has found herself growing fond of the other students in her class, as they share similar interests like an active lifestyle, movies, and music.

In terms of her favorite movies Pereira’s sheer love for Disney Channel Originals like Teen Beach Movie, Descendants, and Highschool Musical shine. The reason she enjoys these movies so much is because they give a nostalgic feeling every time they are watched. Another explanation is the music, as it is genuinely creative, well-written, and sung amazingly. Pereira notes some people may not agree with her adoration of the films, but for her, she reminiscences fondly. For example, in her early childhood, she watched these movies on repeat with her father, who would secretly enjoy viewing them as well.

As an adolescent Pereira would enjoy spending time with her brothers, despite the massive age gap between them. Pereira’s two older brothers are currently twenty-five, and twenty-nine. The siblings did not share many hobbies at the start as Kim was always outside and energetic, while her brothers were more independent and mellow. So, her brothers would not join Pereira outside to play soccer or street hockey. Instead, she found herself finding new interests because her siblings were more into anime and video games. Because of Pereira’s memories of her brothers letting her watch anime, and on a few occasions playing video games with them, she has developed a love for being by herself and doing these things on her own time. When she’s alone, she will play games on her Nintendo Switch, like Splatoon (shown in featured image) and Fire Emblem Three Houses. Pereira also appreciates how her older brothers are available for her, even if they are busy with their own full-time jobs. They still watch anime together and play video games like Smash Ultimate, Jackbox, and Skullgirls.

What Pereira’s games of Smash Ultimate look like when playing with her brothers.

Pereira’s brother Jean-Luc Pereira is someone she has looked up to since she could remember. This is because he’s extremely hardworking, and kind, and gives Pereira endless amounts of time and energy to help her with school work. Since she cares about him too, Pereira gives him lots of advice concerning his relationships with others. Pereira recalls a fond memory of helping her brother after he confessed to her he was unable to do long division and has just been using a calculator his whole life. So when Pereira was in the third grade she helped him understand the concept, and now she has her brother’s quote labeled in her room.

“Never be afraid to ask for help, even I, a university student still ask my little sister to explain long division”
