Audrey Sum / Staff reporter

Audrey Sum is a senior that is part of her upcoming 2023 graduate class with hopes to pursue a field related to journalism or media studies for her post-secondary education. Being born and raised in Hong Kong during her early part of childhood, Audrey’s family decided to immigrate to Vancouver at the age of 6 for the education system and multicultural experience.

Combining her passion with Graphic Design and the Media, she has previously worked with Gleneagle Secondary’s Shelter Society Club as an Executive member for over two years to lead the design team on several clothing and art supplies drives where proceeds were donated to Wildlife Thrift and Value Village.

Although working behind the scenes in the student community of Gleneagle may be difficult at times, the memorable connections made through Student Council and the Gleneagles’s Cafeteria Ambassador program was one of the small steps taken to grow as an avid designer.

Taking on an adventure by participating in Ocean Wise’s YouthToSea Leadership program with the competitive edge of getting selected as one out of eighty of the four hundred applicants, it has opened new pathways learning about ocean conservation and advocacy and an opportunity to create her own Service Project about the environmental impacts that Fast Fashion has in our society with a social media campaign called “Ecommunity.” This was one of her proudest accomplishments that I have worked on, as this was one of the projects that was featured and presented in my cohort’s final showcase at Camp Jubilee.

Ocean Wise is a non-profit organization that specializes in ocean conservation and youth programs funded by Canada Service Corps that help to address environmental impacts of ocean pollution and climate change.

Valuing the importance of making people smile with harvesting and processing vegetables that was taken from the “Farm To Table” experience, she has proven that through SOYL program by Fresh Roots at Suwa’lkh over the sunny months of July and August, as it came with her first-ever published blog on the Fresh Roots website with “A Foodie’s Insight: Community Eats at Suwa’lk” wrapping up her time during her 6 weeks journey.

She thinks that fostering important skills such as collaboration with others is key to growing as an individual, since it can be only learned from participating in club and leadership activities outside of school has helped her in improving her design and concept development in both design and writing.

Audrey’s favorite childhood memory is going to Universal Studios with her family because she enjoys spending quality time with her family and the colorful spaces and different themes caught her attention as a 10 year old kid.

During her free time, Audrey is a foodie that likes to explore the areas of Coquitlam and Metro-Vancouver to find the best breakfast, lunch, dinner for the next best bite while spreading the happiness of bringing friends and family to her favorite restaurants and cafes. She also enjoys taking the weekend off to rewatch her old favorites of Marvel (Doctor Strange) and Minion (Despicable Me) franchises on Netflix.
